A hot grave.

The tame dragon decided, for reasons best known to itself, to go for a swim in the magma pipe. It died in the heat.

A watery grave.

As you can see from the scattered bones, a mighty battle took place here against the skeletal creatures who inhabit the river. "Stabby", the legendary champion who'd defeated a dragon and a titan in single combat sprinted past his compatriots (who were firing their crossbows at the enemy) and dived into the river like Beowulf on PCP. He smashed apart a dozen undead before remembering that he needed to breathe... ...and that was the end of him.

Still, there's been no trouble from the river of late, so I guess it was a fair exchange.

Waterwheel Mechanics

The four waterwheels here power mills on the level above (currently unused due to, ah, "problems" with the food stockpiling situation; I ended up having to dump thousands of plants into the trash...) and are also connected to the pumps which flood the large room north of the living quarters. I wasn't sure that three pumps would be enough to flood such a large space, but they did it no problem (although the river was drained almost to the riverbed near the pumps.)
What I didn't properly estimate was just how long the room would take to empty once filled. It will probably be quicker to dig out, smooth, remove all the rocks from, and block-pave the floor of a larger outflow channel than it will to wait for it to empty through the current one.

Plumbing sublevel.

I was digging out the channels, and couldn't resist the opportunity to mine out each and every seam I ran into, which resulted in the peculiar shapes.

Lower Plaza (now with moats)

This isn't finished yet, but it's coming along nicely. There was a slight accident with the southwest corner of the magma moat, but fortunately it sealed itself when it ran into the water moat.
On the east side of the plaza, the noble rooms are becoming colour coded as the years roll by. :)

The Future Noble Quarters

I think this room has just the right ambiance for nobles, no?

Our first farming attempt

We tried to farm the soil in a natural cave, only to discover that it counts as an aboveground farm. Dang.
Just below, we found an underground pool! of 1 tile in size. with seven, I kid you not, seven monsters in it. Fortunately we breached it from the above.

The glorious water transpotation system

The plan was ambitious; To move 62 tiles worth of water 200 tiles away. With strong heart we ventured forth, only to fail miserably. The water just barely reached the last pool.
Having spent two years with no steady food supply we just built farms inside the channel. Works fine.
To be fixed.

Ballista training facility

Already claimed one life.
An unsuspecting furnace operator got decapitated in a training accident. I revised the design a bit after that.

The execution bridge

Never been used. But I had to have one. Just look at that location.
It'll probably come in handy for breaking the inevitable tantrum spiral.

Collapsed shaft

This shaft was made for a controlled drop of a stone block to the magma channel below. I had to cut the magma after I realized that the original magma pool beneath the forges was too big; it wouldn't fill up. So I cut the magma, added a wall, and presto.
Damn near dropped it on the chasm though.

The subterranean watchtower

Less talk, more dakka.

The approach

These channels were added after invaders stood in the dead angle, safely out of siege engine reach. I plan to eventually add a bridge there to let me charge the invaders, or maybe let loose some dogs.

The Entrance

The only way into the fortress. Paranoid defense, but no traps this time.
