In year 20, the population is up to 43 due to births, offsetting several losses to mountain titans.

* I got my duchess married off and producing noble offspring. Then I burrowed up another couple and they just got married, so I set them back to work while I hook up another couple. I want to have a mix of noble and peasant offspring, so I need at least two non-noble couples for the 3rd generation to work right.
* The archer walkway is completely enclosed (including the roof and diagonals), I have a wall surrounding the area 20 tiles in from the edges, I've completely poured the first obsidian pillar, and am pouring the second one now. There are 3000 obsidian blocks being used in constructions.

It gives my army something to do. Also the macabre aspect of watching a goblin macelord limping up the stairs to the same catwalk, crippled with compound fractures.

I think he took the fall twice before the troops came in to finish the job.

Great security on the grinder/tenderizer! I love so many things about it.

I also like the idea of sending troops out to make sure that no invaders "change their minds" once they've gone down the hole. I've always been a little disappointed whenever crippled or demoralized goblins somehow manage to escape the sieges.

BTW, nowadays drops hurt more when there are spikes at the bottom. It used to be that a 11 z-drop would turn a goblin into a goresplosion, but not so much anymore.

Yes. Once the caverns are breached underground tress will spawn anywhere there is darkness and dirt.
Mining out huge squares of underground soil near the surface is a common way to raise trees in a secure manner. You can even do this during a siege.

Open up the caverns and make a huge patch of underground dirt?

It's a phyllite tower with fortifications. I've set a burrow on the 1st floor. During an ambush, I order my markdwarfs to defend this burrow. It's pretty efficient ^^.

Thanks! It's hard to say how long it took since I put the project on the back burner a few times. Maybe 15 years?

Welp its dead, Masterwork DF decided to make my first Ambush 2 full goblin parties, drow spiders and trolls.
Im doing a similar new map now with a lot of design concepts improved.

That has been my problem with more elaborate designs. You have to wall in fast before the first raid shows up. But then, how do you wall in quickly and then build elaborate Urist McMansions? Hm...

Yes, security was supposed to be way inside the fort, after the entrance. Funny enough, lack of security was what killed it.
The high value of the carvings and roasts invited invaders, and the workshops under the ramps had dwarves out in the open when goblins showed up. It took too many years to carve out. Next time I'll have to do it quicker.

That is interesting, and hopefully the lack of goblins will give you more freedom to do something completely impractically gorgeous with it.
