You see folks, this is how magma forges should be made. None of this minimalist only have a hole where the forge is. Make a lake and situate the forges on the edges. That's how you make a forge.

So I open the map, and I see the description "That's a lot of blood." Now note the map opens to a hill, so I was searching the map for the entrance. Then I found a spot of blood and followed it.

...

After admiring that fine pile of corpses, I noticed purple blood. Bwa?

I'm so damn proud of this fortress. We have condensed Boatmurdered into a single embark square. Our engineering projects are tripping over eachother. Our deathtraps cannot function without taking down a couple dwarves. The ground around these lands is littered with ash, decayed weapons and armor and corpses. A tower into she sky begins as stone, then moves onto glass and metals because they are more abundant. Below dwarves move up staircases around a half-filled magma pipe, building structures inside the obsidian case in a mocking tone to the very earth itself. The walls all around them carry the threat of magma and aquifers. There are even rumors of a demon dwelling inside the pit, driving the occupants mad.

Gentlemen, I shall salute you all when this falls.

So, the glitch where pressure doesn't travel through diagonals is still workin'? Cool. I need to remember that one.

I must say, this is a nice-lookin' castle. The moat just works well, and looks like it wasn't dug out.

Unless it wasn't. Then DF has map feature new to me.

Woah.

Alright, I'm admitting that this could take my title as King of the Aboveground Castles simply because of the second-story engravings.

Ah yes, the technicolor wall. It has saved me several carpel tunnel injuries for the reason listed. And most of the design here came from research on European castles, as this was intended for a thread on amazing aboveground castles.

Actually, I have just received an idea on some villas. Villas that would be amazing to the castle. Damn. Now I have to kill the damn titan and reclaim.

Now that is a proper dwarven entrance. Top of a hill, 3x3 staircases all the way, all smoothed, countless deathtraps.

Awesome. Now to get magma in there somehow...

Rhenaya? Jealous? Oh lord, I appear to have received a complement from the master of Aquifers! Oh, what does one say?
I'm sure I could have made this place stupidly complex and amazing, but that is not terribly Human. It is up to the Dwarves to make things needlessly complicated. And as such, I might make a series of sites with designs based upon the race they use. Goblins shall make an obsidian tower, Elves will use a magma pipe and sand to make renewable, eco-friendly glass towers and dwarves shall make a fortress around a chasm.
The tileset I'm using would work better in such areas, as I can perfectly tell what is happening in small spaces but large open spaces provide too much information. Thus this was not a terribly good place to use it.Still, turned out well.

Also, I discovered what might be a slight bug. It appears removing the walls used in sealing the tomb of the Lord and Lady reveals... well, the black tiles. Still there. I'll have to test this and report any bugs I see.

While at first glance this map appears to be a typical dwarven fortress under a vertical layout, the Hammer Chamber changes that. Oh yes. this place is different. And if you have glass, I advise draining enough of the pipe to install windows into the magma. Nothing says mastery over the rock and magma beneath yer feet like having windows into molten rock for no good reason.
