I've been playing Dwarf Fortress since the second-to-last 2D version was released, quit briefly after a siege, and started again when the 3D version came out.

This is a very Dwarfy setup, and an impressive effort for your second-ever fort! I'm surprised you were able to master the game well enough to survive being at war with another major race, but it looks like you're doing well. Love the long curved wall and the natural-looking moat.

I like some of the perimeter concepts here - having a large valley all to yourself, for example, where you can farm trees with impunity. That's pretty cool!

Love the layout, especially the tendency to avoid square or ugly rectangular rooms.

The floodgates are controlled from a lever that I placed in the communal bedroom in the hallway above the dorms. I used the last masterwork mechanism that Olin made... luckily during the last caravan visit I had put a bunch of steel trap components on my Narrow GCS Credit Card. The trap jammed about halfway through the invasion, but up until that point it was like an episode of "WILL IT BLEND?" with elves.

stoned funeral, I think you must be right - if a route is fastest from A to B, then it's also fastest from B to A. If a Dwarf comes up through either of the leftmost stairwells he'll probably choose to go left rather than right.

We'll see how it works. I can always dig them out!

I really like the spiral staircase design!

I suspect that the logs in the river fell in during moat construction: trees prevent channelling, so the trees were ordered to be chopped... then channels were designated before the logs got hauled off. I wish dwarves would move logs/stones away from the dig site like they do when placing workshops!

Anyway timmeh, it's a good solid aboveground fort. If I were on this map I'd be very worried about trees growing to block my wagon access. Are you planning to build a road? Will it be lined with watch-towers, or will the edges be sprinkled with traps?

Duke, this is amazing. The moat looks like a natural terrain feature, but looking at earlier maps it's clear that you dug it. I dig it! Your outdoor farmplex and lumber yards are also pretty awesome. I'm taking notes... some of these features are definitely ending up in my next fort.

Hey, look at that technicolor tie-dyed wall! Did you build that to keep "Random Colored Block (1)" from showing up in your construction list all the time?

Hey, don't let them bug you about the Mickey thing. Maybe Armok the Blood God loves mice! Maybe the dwarfs are big John Bonham fans! This is a great above-ground fort, and breeding jaguars is a nice touch. Can you train them to be War Jaguars, or does that require modding the raws?

Very cool. I like the idea of a big solid keep half-buried into the face of the mountain. And what a starting location! The pastures on top of the mesa would be great for fenced-in farming... I bet you could even build a bridge out of green glass and have a greenhouse set into that hillock in the NW corner. Not that you need any more food!

I like the emphasis on diamonds in construction as opposed to the more traditional squares and rectangles. Very cool!

I've got more swords and mechanisms in production, but I wanted to make sure to place them in the middle first.

Looks like it's made of Rose Gold, to begin with. I imagine it's studded with goblin bone and upholstered with finely-dyed giant cave spider silk.

I was pretty excited when I saw the name. It would be great to try to do an actual copy of Ironforge with two stories of concentric circles... but you'd have to fill the map with the main ring.

What an incredibly Dwarfy solution to a siege! You are to be commended sir. Also, I really like your compact and vertical approach using lots of 11x11 rooms.
