Glovedbuck - 253 Late Summer by mattmoss

Map Description:

A new approach... small map (3x3)... organization (mostly)... and my longest played fortress. This has been pretty smooth, though that is in part due to not being interrupted. No invaders, no thieves (weird!), only a couple kidnappers, and the most dangerous things were a couple fire imps and some wolves. (I think I've lost more dwarves due to sparring accidents than wildlife!)

The basic approach with this fort is to group related things together in towers. I'll use waypoints later to provide details, but for example, one tower is "food production". Top layer(s) are farms and seeds, next down is raw food storage, next down is kitchen/still/millstone/f.w.s, finally below that is prepared food storage. All connected by stairs.

Other towers are similar. At the moment, these are towers only in thought, but eventually the earth around them will be dug out so these will be carved-out stone towers.

I also want to divert water from the river and incorporate it into the design, somehow.

At the time I generated this map, I had around 90 dwarves or so, the highest I've ever had. Also new to me was the arrival of the Dungeon Master.

I'm finding it a little difficult to keep all these dwarves occupied. The tower concept is fun, but I'm not sure how I want to expand particular industries... for instance, if I wanted two stills and double the prepared food storage... Should I keep digging down? Dig out?

I haven't even put in beds for all these dwarves and I have to ask these questions...

I like the tower design, it's much simpler than the one I use.

Interestingly, when I organise things like this I always spend ages before getting defences or rooms built too. I'm not sure if this is a pattern.
