My first fortress to flourish functionally. I've never gotten past year 1 on a previous fortress before (not really due to cataclysm, more because I get distracted or think of something new to try).
Axeblade the Anger of Ancients, group name The Seal of Demons, of the dwarven civilization The Virginal Lenses.
If anyone has any tips on how I can improve my fortress structure/aesthetics/otherwise, please share. I've already got a couple of ideas for my next fortress (smaller site, more horizontal building), but all is good.

I really have no idea how to show lots of tiles while still keeping the fonts and tiles readable. Toady did it in his previews, but I just don't get what sort of ratio I'm aiming for.

I'm using an 1100 * 720 window and 110 * 30 grid with the 800 by 600 curses font, the tiles seem to be 10*24 pixels.

Your up staircase / down (u) / (j) staircase arrangement is unusual - I suspect that as it is it doesn't offer an advantage over an up-and-down (i) staircase. However, it might be the case that if the (u) and (j) stairs were separated more instead of being adjacent, it would be better than a single (i) staircase, as the traffic would separate instead of all funnelling through the same area.

The danger of a single up/down column is that a dwarf who trips or falls at the top will fall all the way to the bottom and die.
He can fall from being hit by a goblin or by sparring, from being washed by a flood, or maybe from falling unconcious from pain at the wrong time.
