Citybite - 378 Early Spring by Phrog

Map Description:

Things are going along swimmingly for Citybite. The fortress still has not been besieged and I am growing impatient. I am rather anxious to test out how effective the defenses will be given that all I have ever done before was a trap corridor and nothing else.

Work on the mechanics continues. Hopefully someday I will have that moat up and running.

3rd Granite, 378: The elves waste no time. Scarcely had the season changed when one of the smug, pointy-eared, overgrown fairies showed up at our fortress and chewed out the Baron for "abusing the trees." I have half a mind to "abuse" the elf in the same way we "abuse" the trees here.

1st Slate, 378: The foul goblins still have not seen fit to send a proper siege, instead opting for cowardly ambushes near the fortress's entrance while the merchants are visiting. It has happened so many times I wonder if it is a cultural habit of goblinkind. The ambush stumbled right into the path of the Granite Bells, who were very eager to dash them to pieces. A human was among their number. As always, the highly valuable giant cave spider silk garments they bring with them are greatly appreciated.

4th Slate, 378: There has been a second ambush consisting of some wrestlers, a human bowman, and a lone goblin axe wielder. They jumped one of the siege operators as he was fetching stone to load one of the practice catapults with. Miraculously the bowman decided that the puppy accompanying the siege operator was a greater threat and charged the canine head-on while Fath "Boatshelped" Koganusen made a hasty retreat.

The marksdwarves got their first taste of battle and displayed an affinity for shooting their targets in the leg. I would have preferred headshots but beggars cannot be choosers. As the fight was going on Fath was running as fast as his stunted dwarven legs could carry him while being pursued by two wrestlers and an axegoblin. Luckily he evaded injury. Two goblins escaped. Hopefully they tell their leaders that they should send a proper siege instead of these tiny ambush parties. Scarcely had the fortress time to loot the bodies when a third ambush occurred. A war dog was immediately *ahem*... dogpiled by goblin wrestlers and was injured, but it distracted the attackers long enough for our troops to get into position and attack. Due to some dwarves pursuing the two fleeing goblins earlier, their return left the invaders flanked. One of the other war dogs present ripped an arm right off of a speargoblin, perhaps as revenge for the other dog's injuries.

28th Slate, 378: Citybite has received its first group of migrants in quite a while. Among them was the philosopher Kel Kûbukirid who proceeded to do absolutely nothing once arriving. A census taken shortly thereafter informed us that we were now sizable enough to be considered a county. The baron's ego proceeded to inflate exponentially.

23rd Felsite, 378: One of the leatherworkers had a fey mood but was a little too picky when it came to materials. I suspect he wanted either pineapple opal or silk cloth, neither of which the fortress possesses. Too bad for Kogan. The other dwarves are placing bets on the exact manner of death.

3rd Hematite, 378: Enough is enough. My framerate has plummeted to under 20 FPS. Operation Slaughter All Stray Animals (except some dogs) shall commence. My fortress will be buried beneath heaps of kitten tallow and horse skulls, but the end result will be worth it. 61 animals have been targeted for systematic extermination. Perhaps I will get a legendary butcher out of this!

1st Malachite, 378: I think the animals are on to me. There has been a spike in cat adoption recently. I shall not accept defeat!

14th Galena, 378: The dwarves have begun work on an invasion tunnel leading towards Basinmined the Noiseless Net. Unsealing the cave entrance would prove too much of a security risk with dwarves running along outside to get bones and bodies. It would make them quite prone to goblin ambushes and other like calamities. Additionally, digging the tunnel will allow me to lock the doors behind troops heading inside the cave which will help prevent hapless civilians running inside to collect severed limbs while they are still warm and caught in the thick of battle.

22nd Galena, 378: The first sparring-related death occurred today. Såkzul Tabaråblel, an elite wrestler (no major loss, thankfully) suffocated in the barracks, likely a result of having his chest caved in by one of the champion's hammers. Frankly I am surprised it has taken this long for a sparring death (or even serious injury) to occur.

20th Limestone, 378: The kitchen area is a rotting mass of animal chunks and skins which now flood the place with a large stinking cloud of miasma. I must press on! Victory against the stray animals is so close!

12th Moonstone, 378: At last, the goblins of Ngom Kunga, "the Doom of Flags" decided not to insult us with a meager ambushing party and have sent a full-blown siege to test the mettle of Citybite. A small contingent of axegoblins and wrestlers (no humans this time) appeared in the southern mountains and made their way to the fortress. All squads were put on alert and passage outside of the fortress was quickly forbidden.

Once the goblins were within range of the siege engines the order was given to fire. While the first volley narrowly missed, the second was far more lethal. A single bolt skewered four of the invaders and that was enough to send them running back to wherever in Armok's realm they came from. Our champions pursued them to the borders of our settlement and managed to slay three more before the lot of them escaped. Maybe next time they will send enough to make it to the entrance ramp!

23rd Opal, 378: With all preparations having been made, the Granite Bells are now poised to strike at Basinmined the Noiseless Net and all monsters within it including the legendary cyclops Otik Eguliseth Fimshel Kadôl. May Armok have mercy upon those beasts because the bloodthirsty champions of the Granite Bells surely will not.

3rd Obsidian, 378: As I predicted, Mistêm "Skinnyshoot" has claimed the kill of Otik Eguliseth the Persuader of Gems. Unfortunately, after killing the cyclops and a few troglodytes and giant bats he promptly decided to fall asleep! The squad is starting to become thirsty and hungry so as much as it displeases me the Granite Bells will be rotated out and the Salves of Running, an unproven squad of champions, shall take their place.

13th Obsidian, 378: The assault upon Basinmined continues. Many giant bats in addition to trolls and troglodytes have been slain. Unfortunately the elite wrestler (again, no major loss) Kol Sôddakost was slain by a giant bat after being overexerted, but thems the breaks. His pet donkey was also killed by the creatures so they can chill in the afterlife I suppose. I suspect the rest of the cave shall be cleared in short order. I'll see if I can get some movies I've been taking uploaded but since they are larger than one meg each I'll have to contact whoever runs the place.

Its gonna be hard to stay away from that cave considering how huge it is.

It won't be hard to stay away because of the size. The map has plenty of room. However, it will be hard to stay away because of the temptation of sending in some dwarves to stir up some mayhem.

So how is your "Cave extermination unit" doing. I still see some trolls dwelling down there. (be sure to make a vid of your dwarfs going through the tunnels killing everything in their way.)

I've been deliberating if I want to send in the troops (the Granite Bells again. They have the best equipment, skills, and some thirty kills to their name including one dwarf with twelve) or if I want to flood the entire cave with magma for hilarity's sake. Sending the troops in would be fun, but I'd also have to worry about forbidding everything in there beforehand so civilians don't go running in blindly. Then I'll have to manage a bunch of hauling jobs that the slaughter would invariably create (or, again, I could forbid the hell out of everything). Right now I'm leaning towards nuking the cave from orbit and letting Armok sort them out. Hey, at least the fort will have awesome engravings of everything melting if I do!
