Channelbottom - 329 Mid Summer by Noble Digger

Map Description:

The Elves may suspect something is up by now. :)

Deep below the four towers, the main tower is being carved out of the rock a level at a time. The current access roads are temporary and will eventually be replaced by a magical unicorn fantasy pathway through the sky

Point of Interest: 01. Fortress Rooftop

( 329 Mid Summer → onwards )

It's almost hard to imagine but eventually this will be the 'top' of the fortress, and there will be no earth or stone above it.

To the lower left is the farming tower and a small, bucket-filled pond for drinking. The upper left is the barracks, which occupies the bottom floor of the industry tower. The upper right is currently a bone stockpile and the lower right holds cages and kennels (currently removed for smoothing).

The Trade Depot sits off to the center of the statue garden. Presently, caravans can get here via one of the four trade roads that access the surface world to the north, south, east, and west. - Noble Digger

That's a lot of guards . . .

Make sure you kill the Druid horribly.

Over the past year, 6 elves have been mangled or killed by Unicorns, as have all 3 of my soldiers (2 bled to death in bed months later)

One of the Unicorns involved in the slaughter had its eyes snatched out by a soldier, before stalking blindly into the woods and departing the site, swaddled in a new title...

Unless I'm missing something terribly obvious, you seem to have neglected to build any individual bedrooms. Is that even possible? What kind of monstrosity is this?

That's not to say that levels 10 and 11 aren't gorgeous, but still...

Yeah, everyone sleeps in the barracks right now. The individual bedrooms are going a few levels deeper than i've yet to dig, and the statue gardendining hall keep the dwarves plenty happy.

I really love the way the you've carved out the upper levels. The terrain deformities you've made look very natural and clean. The elves are probably shitting themselves right about now I'd say. ^___^

Thought you'd like that shit :) I wanted to make a fort that melds stoic geometry with natural cavern designs, so i figured i'd staple the natural caverns to the top of the geometric fortress tower. The way I picture it in my head is a monumental stone pillar with the rest of the world that has yet managed to survive impaled on the top of it.

The edges of the final pit will also be natural like this, but they will end up being sheer rather than having ramps down into them (with exceptions).

I regret not having flowing water because this place would be great for nagrand islands complete with water source and all, but the ponds suffice for my purposes.

ClsfdKidd, I throw everyone in barracks as well for years on end, and cook them good food instead, no homes until the fort is ready.

And Noble Digger, I admire the progress of sinking the area into the ground to create your towers.

Thanks yo. It's slow going because the dwarves randomly cause a collapse once a season for NO DISCERNABLE REASON. I always fully clearcut the forest before I designate any ramps (i don't use the channel tool at all) and I watch the dwarves dig to make sure a new tree didn't pop up at a bad time, but once in a while a tile will get ramped out and collapse for some reason. About 13 of the time the dwarf gets crushed and I have to save scum.

That happens to me too. I'll hire a miner, have him run off and dig some ramps in the dirt for practice, go attend to other matters, then A SECTION OF THE CAVERN HAS COLLAPSED! and the whole thing starts again. Doing things one row/column at a time helps marginally.
Anyway, the pond digging is quite pretty. So's the tower.
