I wasn't really planning to upload images of this fort for a while, but some things happened with an ambush that I thought I'd share.
Some general information, in this map I've capped the dwarf limit on 30, but until I stopped births, further pregnancies pushed me to my current 40something dwarves.
Lakeside area, no aquifer (:D), no magma, and IIRC, no HFS. Two brooks end up in the lake. I only started here because I never had started in a lakeside map, and because I found that magma and HFS, as in my previous maps, set clear goals that ended up getting in the way of me doing things such as megaprojects (I hit adamantine, first thing I'd have to do is start making royal rooms for the incoming ruler). I wouldn't say that what I'm doing right now constitutes a megaproject, but I've never really done anything of the sort so far, so I thought I'd start with something.

Consider digging a ramp for that poor hammerdwarf? And how does he avoid starving, anyway?

I'm fairly certain that caravan guards don't die of thirst or hunger or anything like that.
Actually, I had a dwarf drop in there at some point and built a stairway for him to get out. The hammerdwarf didn't even move from his position. And now after a few rains, the water level has risen to 5/6 out of 7, and he still doesn't move; or drown.

The caravan guard eventually moved around the pool once water level reached 6 to 7 out of 7. He eventually left when he spotted a kobold thief when my defences were inactive, as he left the pool and killed him.
