I'm trying something new with this fortress. I'm making several (mostly) independent wings of the fortress. I'm thinking ahead to burrows and stuff, but for the time being I just assign jobs in such a way that most dwarves stay pretty well within their wing. The top floor is going to be the military wing once I get some more recruits and get some additional armor made. The second level is farming wing on the left (west) side, and production wing on the right (east) side.

I hope you've assigned war dogs to your woodcutters, considering they'll prefer to chop down the trees in the northwest corner of the map rather than the ones right by your entrance.

I haven't bothered with war dogs, honestly. I just designated all the trees so I wouldn't have to manage my woodcutters for a while. I haven't seen anything more dangerous than a couple of groundhogs yet. No telling where the goblins are at.

Wouldn't that level of deforestation bring the wrath of the elves?

New DF fan here. My experience, albeit limited, is the elves do not seem to mind so much as long as you do not attempt to sell them wooden stuff. Deforestation close to the entrance of my cave has reached a level that begins to leave nothing but sand just beyond the flinty halo around the cliff I chose to make my first fortress home out of. Despite the visual evidence of my wastefulness of the woods, they have come every year that I have had a path available to my trading post.

Elves only whine about tree cutting once you get a Baron (if I recall), at which point they start sending a diplomat to place logging quotas (which, if you violate, will get them angry at you, potentially to the point of war).

I'm actually hoping to start wars with both the elves and humans in this game, to help things be a little more interesting. I've got more maps to upload as well, which I'll try to do shortly.
