My map for the DFM2 Contest
This is the big one for my fortress. I wanted my dwarves to have a dwarf-like habitat and I also wanted to stay true to the name of Muckgrotto. So my plan ended up being this, a 6 z-level cavern carved out deep below the earth.
For whatever reason the thought of a Grotto makes me think water so I wanted the cavern to have a watery floor and use the interconnected bridges as means of travelling. - Logo
The HTML5 map viewer is currently in Alpha mode - I'm actively trying to develop new functionality.
There should be many very obvious problems with the viewer; please check
the
Issues page to notify or comment on the most egregious problems to help
me prioritise. The most common will be Loading... with an error
in the browser developer tools console. e.g. RangeError: Offset is
outside the bounds of the DataView
. Feel free to
report a problem
with a link to the problematic map or point of interest.

You can download the compressed map file:

but you will need the .NET version of
SL's DF Map Compressor
to convert to the .PNG image format.

Running at 30 fps at the moment, my computer is fairly new.

Oooh, very nice.
To bad about the water flowing in from the fortifications. Having a huge waterfall around that central tower would have been epic.
You could probably still do it, you would just need an intricate setup of pumps to remove excess water and pump it back up to the aquifer level. Would kill your FPS though.

Wow... I love that Grotto! That's honestly beautiful, and creates a really neat atmosphere for the underground section of the Fortress. Something about a city built over a flooded cavern evokes a really awesome image in my mind.

Yes, wow... the grotto is certainly the crowning acheivement of the fort. Really gives a sense of outdoors deep beneath the ground.

*gestures at the bridges in grotto*
I must say, I absolutely love the aesthetics of mid-air catwalks, even if their efficiency is worse the grander they are (especially if I make them most catwalky and 1-tile wide - though with staircases, can be several z tall path). Whenever I get a proper excuse, I build one :v
