The artificial chasm has now been completely dug out, however until I decide what I want to do with the ground at the bottom (probably turn it into farming space and see if I can run an artificial river through it ) for certain, I've left the ramps left over from excavation where they are.
I've also begun construction of the aboveground tower, by building a wall around the open upper floor (which also staves off opportunist enemy crossbowmen).
Using the opportunity bought me by the exiting caravan, the dwarves have begun construction of what will one day become a tower - possibly even sky city. For now, however, it's just a wall to keep opportunists with crossbows from firing into the courtyard. - Fensfield

I seem to recall that caravans get very confused if you have more than one trade depot.

None of mine have so far! It's probably because the two are in close proximity and accessed by basically the same route. Thus far, all merchants have gone directly to the eastern depot, without any dithering.
