Wasprag - 73 Mid Autumn by Quietust

Map Description:

Six and a half years have passed, and much has happened.

Seven legendary Hammerdwarves were trained, clad in full Adamantine plate armor and wielding (and sparring with) exceptional Adamantine war hammers.

A protective cougar tallow soap bar fence was built around the perimeter of the magma pipe, mainly to prevent any of said hammerdwarves from accidentally dodging into the magma during combat. A similar fence was built within the Shrine.

The circular walls beneath the magmafalls have been torn down (collapsed, actually), and a pair of siege engine platforms have been built which fire across the magma pipe and toward enemy troops. The catapults aren't terribly effective, despite being made entirely of masterwork parts, but any stockpiled ballista bolts would be quickly burned up by the fire snakes.

The axles linking the bridge's northern magma pumps have been moved back and into an enclosure, allowing me to fully seal the entrance bridge from the outside.

A long ramp has been built onto the battlements, extending all the way to the top of the map, from which I can drop prisoners for quick disposal.

All of my green glass furniture has been replaced with clear glass, and the archery ranges have been fully smoothed (and paved where there was previously black sand).

Lots of additional engraving has been done, and a few stockpiles have been rearranged. Tons of exploratory mining was also done, allowing for plenty more strange moods.

Finally, as an experiment, my suicide booth was put to use on my Tax Collector, followed by my Duke and Duchess Consort a year later, in an attempt to determine exactly who is responsible for starting the Dwarven Economy. When the Tax Collector's replacement arrived, I was pleased to see that she had very simple preferences, though the Economy remained inactive. When the replacement Duke arrived a year later, the Economy immediately activated, though a quick look at the preferences of himself and his consort resulted in another unfortunate accident involving the entrance bridge.

With the Economy activated, everyone has been given clear glass chests in which to store their items, and 8 clear glass Shops have been built in the recreation floor.

With this fortress effectively nearing retirement, I've drafted a design for an experimental fully automated Obsidian factory, intended to augment my existing manually operated system. Should it work, the design will be carried forward to my future fortresses.

Point of Interest: Siege Platforms

( 73 Mid Autumn → onwards )

Two of my four legendary Siege Operators can man these catapults, built entirely from masterwork parts, during sieges and attempt to pelt the Goblins with chunks of Obsidian (the only stone I allow my dwarves to use). So far, during 2 different sieges, they've managed to kill one goblin wrestler (and it even took 2 hits to do so).

Ballistas would be an obvious upgrade, but their wooden ammunition would be quickly burned up by the numerous fire snakes slithering around the perimeter of the magma pipe. - Quietust

Holy crap thats cool. How are you gonna get all that magma there? construct a big pumping tower?

I'll build a pump tower extending all the way to the top of the map, then direct its output into a tube that goes down to ground level, through a short tunnel, and into an opening at the bottom of the pyramid. Pump pressure should allow it to fill all the way to the top.

That's a fantastic fortress. Do the fortifications in the tower cap farm actually drain water?

Absolutely - in fact, that's exactly why I built them.
