Wandertower - 1064 Mid Summer by msallen

Map Description:

I'm not sure why I decided to abandon my old fortress, but I did. I made some mistakes designing my main fortress, caused some cave ins, and just generally had a difficult time. I also felt like I developed too much infrastructure west of the cave river and I was having trouble moving it deeper. I guess I just wanted a fresh start. So without further ado...

I made careful plans and preperations before departing in an effort to maximize my early growth. I brought along one of every meat and counted out my wares to maximize the number of barrels and carts I had. But when I arrived I only had 2 carts and I quickly realized I had forgot the booze. Its surprising how much drinking from the river slows down your productivity. But I wasn't interested in starting over again, so I decided to make it work.

I had planned on fishing the swamps and cave river through the first winter. I brought along 2 novice fisher/novice grower to do this. But since I needed to use a lot of my plump helmets to produce my initial booze, I decided to plant a farm before the winter. I haven't made it to the river yet and mid summer is here, and I'm a little anxious about clearing space before the autumn flood. But I'm sure the first trade caravan will bring me some food and help me make it through.

The large entryway has been serving me well. I like the flexibility it provides as far as placing stockpiles, industry, and beds. I got myself in so much trouble in earlier games by boxing in my workshops. This resulted in many dwarves trapping themselves. Also, I used to try to plan out how much space I would need for stockpiles, and build rooms so that they could house related industries. This arrangement allows me to easily do everything I want to do, but with a lot less obsessing.

Shiny. Nice entrance, still waiting to flood it I presume? Lost anyone to floods yet?

No, for some reason the pathing algorithm rarely leads dwarves into the channels and it was much easier to flood than other versions I've made. I think because dwarves are only interested in getting outside and then back across the bridge. In the next map you'll see I flooded it so I could build the bridges across it. One dwarf got caught in that flood, but he managed to stagger out onto dry land. Hopefully when I flood it for good everyone will live.

Yes, legendary dining rooms are that easy to get, remember its a shared one, as apposed to a single dining room for a noble. Just imagine, the engravings across the dining room floor are a sight to be hold across the kingdom. ;)

If you're still wondering about how to collect dead groundhogs, try o:Orders r:Refuse o:Collect Outside Refuse. Butcher-dwarves will then gather dead animals & butcher them, everything else gets tossed on the refuse pile. (mmm mmm macaque meat!)
