Ironsword - 1056 Early Winter by Lemunde

Map Description:

There's three different cave systems on this map plus a magma sea. The magma sea is great but the caves make it hard to carve out rooms. But that can be fun too. But it's especially a challenge to get to ore with all the caves right next to each other without running into damp or warm stone.

After my previous failed fortresses I decided to close this one off completely to keep all the baddies out. This makes getting wood from both above and below difficult, especially since I have two megabeasts roaming around waiting for me to make a mistake.

Δ 32. Tree farm
Since I opened up so many caverns I figured I'd make the most of it by digging out some loam and seeing what grows. I probably should have made it bigger but this will do for now. I already have three fungitrees! - Lemunde
Δ 27. Food storage design
I'm starting to use a different design for my food and booze storage. Here you see all my booze on the left and all the food on the right. A hallway extends south to a still, fishery and butchery. I wasn't going to bother with the fishery but someone was demanding shell and a fisherdwarf had already snuck in and started fishing turtles so I took advantage.

You'll notice the different colored barrels. Those are silver and nickel barrels. Since wood is at a premium and nickel and silver are relatively plentiful here I decided to make all my furniture out of them. Eventually I'll get rid of all the wood barrels to make it more uniform. - Lemunde
Δ 20. Bridge
As I said, getting to ore is difficult due to the nature of the cave systems. I had to build a makeshift bridge here to extend my access to resources.

Every once in a while I'll get a job cancellation message because my dwarves keep seeing some mutant turtle megabeast running around down below while crossing the bridge. I should probably build a wall around the bridge but it's just a minor annoyance for now. - Lemunde
Δ 18. Possible megabeast solution
I thought I would be clever here. I dug out a room and put a pressure plate at one end that triggers two sets of vertical bars to close. One would have been enough but those megabeasts are friggin fast so I thought it would be wise to be thorough.

To entice the megabeast inside I chained up a dog at the other end. Kinda reminds me of that one scene in Jurassic Park with the goat. The idea is that the megabeast goes inside, steps on the pressure plate and by the time he's done eating the dog the bars will have closed trapping him inside.

That's assuming that megabeasts can't or won't destroy certain mechanisms and structures. I'm pretty sure the bars will hold but I'm not so sure about the mechanisms controlling them. There isn't enough information available right now to know exactly what will happen. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I'm keeping the rest of my fortress closed off. As soon as my miner dug out that last hole into the cave and got back inside I closed those gates and I don't plan to open them until I'm sure that megabeast is dealt with.

Unfortunately I haven't seen or heard from him for at least a month. Either he finally wandered off or he's toying with me. - Lemunde
Δ 10. Forges
I found this design to be pretty efficient in avoiding getting warm stone cancellation messages since my miners have to channel out a couple of pits for the furnaces and forge.

Now, I shouldn't have to worry about anything coming through the forges since I made sure to channel out the hole for the magma where the impassable tile would be. But I think I heard somewhere that creatures could still come up through a magma forge somehow so I made sure to build a handful of cage traps just in case.

Another level up you'll find all my metal storage. Haven't gotten around to smelting those adamantine strands yet. - Lemunde
