The path finding is triggered by the front gate being open.
The goblin will never make it to the treasure at the end and is always looped back around . . . unless he falls in a spiked pit, which is randomly triggered by the goblin in the cell.

Sweet.
Now , combine it with the fact that goblins are immortal(unless they meet with dwarves), and you've got a goblin that does this for eternity.Maybe dropping him into HFS would be better for him.
