The fight that occurred right at the fortress gate. Four recruits were lost in the end, with the champions of the fight being my most experienced hammerdwarf and a completely inexperienced speardwarf who happened to be wielding a steel spear, which I had traded for the previous fall. The only civilian to die was a fairly useless hauler.

At first it looks dire, but then the purple dude (my hammerdwarf) surprised me by surviving. And the steel-spear that one of my recruits held was the only reason that he survived: had his weapon been less effective, he would most likely have fallen along with his squadmates.
I was pleasantly surprised to survive.
