I just embarked on a new fortress using the new release (.181.39c) and these five "holes in the world" are right next to where I started.
I think I'll tell the Dwarves not to get too close to these bottomless pits. :)

That's really weird. You should post about those holes in the forums. It might be a bug. I wonder what would happen if you threw something down one of them?

Actually, shortly after starting, the holes *mostly* disappeared. The surface level still reported "open space", but the tile image changed, and all levels below appeared solid again.
