This is a movie about how to farm Obsidian for fun and Profit. A good Obsidian farm wouldn't even need a drain like mine has, but My drain is to clean up after my "Last Resort" of flooding my entire fortress, and incidental to the Obsidian Farm. That is why there is no direct drain from the Obsidian Farm zone to the drain. Of course I won't need obsidian for 10 or more years, so the system isn't effective, I just ran it a little premie to show people how to farm it properly.

the problem with that is when you dig it out the magma just melts the obsidian rocks

As long as you dig with ramps, you can access the rocks. Just don't let the magma in until you are ready for it.
