Foresthold - 107 Early Spring by timmeh

Map Description:

Beginning year seven now, still no luck with the baron, although at least I know why now. (Didn't know about the jobs requirements) Oddly enough there were no immigrants this year. At first I thought I must have capped it wrong, but I guess I just haven't been impressing the dwarf civ enough. That should change, as I traded nearly two year worth of goblin armor to the most recent caravan, and offered some rediculous amount of -limestone toys- and such.

I got a load of construction done, finished the walls, top and bottom, finished the floors in between the walls, got a siege workshop built, four practice catapults, roofs over the outer towers, and some work done towards the preparation for a device I've dubbed my "early Warning System". It's pretty simple though, it's going to be some repeating pressure plates set up to be one-time use and reset-able, which will repeatedly active some red floor hatches throughout the fortress, to let me know when a goblin ambush shows up.

There's a fair bit more that I accomplished this year, that will be described in PoI. I survived my first goblin siege (not just this fort, my first siege ever) without any (dwarven) casualties. It revealed some small issues with my defenses which were quickly mended. I did, however, have two of the fortress guard die in sparring accidents, one of which took place with one of my legendary axedwarves, and the other with a trainee speardwarf. I have taken steps to prevent further accidents, but nothing is certain.

Point of Interest: 8. The Tombs

This floor is used for burials, with the smaller sections used for dead pets and enemy dwarves, and the larger ones used for my dwarves. Only four of the larger rooms have been filled, and only about 6 of the smaller spots are occupied.

You may have noticed that the walls around the staircase are being re-built. This is because I tried engraving them and it looked really wierd for some reason, so I decided to clear them out and just leave clean walls. - timmeh

Lookin good so far. What's with the logs in the river?

I really like the spiral staircase design!

I suspect that the logs in the river fell in during moat construction: trees prevent channelling, so the trees were ordered to be chopped... then channels were designated before the logs got hauled off. I wish dwarves would move logs/stones away from the dig site like they do when placing workshops!

Anyway timmeh, it's a good solid aboveground fort. If I were on this map I'd be very worried about trees growing to block my wagon access. Are you planning to build a road? Will it be lined with watch-towers, or will the edges be sprinkled with traps?

@juice - Thanks!

The logs are, like Jurph suggested, from loose logs being on the tiles when they were mined.

@ Jurph - Thank you! I'm considering using a smaller version for the towers.

I've started a road (thanks for the reminder!). I plan to get some watchtowers along the road, probably connected to the fortress by underground tunnels, and with no other way in/out, to prevent unwanted access through the tunnels.

Thanks again, to both of you!

I like your eight towers along the road, perfect to impress those barbarian humans and elves.
I don't particularly like the smoothed floor tiles for this tileset though, they look too raised, if you know what I mean.

Its so... flat, at least on the surface! Very cool space you've sealed off though, and everything is building down towards an epic fort.
