Craftspully - 1067 Mid Spring by msallen

Map Description:

Yup, I've restarted a third time. My last fortress was doing well and there was not particularly good reason to restart. But I played around with DF a bit over vacation and wanted to run a full game with some of the techniques I used. Mostly, I was interested in a more aggressive starting year and a lower reliance on fishing, which has always irritated me.

This time, I started out racing for the cave river using a 3-tile wide corridor with 2 doors enclosing an entryway. My initial workshops for masonry, carpentry, and crafts were built outside. The two farmers I brought with me were tasked to herb gathering (they went from unskilled to competent by the end of the first winter).

I reached and bridged the river by the end of the first spring. I also had time to build a seed room and migrate my stocks over to it. After the summer seasonal flood, I built my first farm plot on the east side of the cave river. This provided huge amounts of food and booze by my first winter (I brought a lot of seeds with me).

Curiously, I attracted no migrants during my first autumn at the site. I'm not exactly sure how that came to pass. Possibly because my main accomplishment was some mined out space and a farm plot. Otherwise, I had only made some dark and lite stone crafts that were decorated with bones. However, spring more than made up for this with a massive 22 dwarf immigration! Thankfully, everything is in order and I expect no problems providing food for these new team members.

Point of Interest: stream of immigrants

Look at them all! 22 of the bastards in my first wave! I need to start making beds for reals! - msallen

It looks like you've made good progress with your plans. You usually don't receive any migrants in the first autumn, spring of the next year is the big arrival date. A lot of migrancy is down to the wealth of your fortress; food can be a good source of wealth early on. The fact you have already widened the river to form a floodplane should pay dividens with tree farming in the coming years. Good luck with the fort :)
