Waytin - 1057 Early Spring by msallen

Map Description:

Well, I finally uploaded the newest version of the game and I am giving it a try. I was a little hesitant because my least favorite thing about the game is micromanaging. Or, more accurately, its the part that I engage in compulsively and without pleasure. In any case, here goes. Perhaps this time I will have the patience to make if over a few years. In any case, I present to you my fortress after its first year.

I picked a spot for this fortress in an area with high elevation because I wanted to try out making interior towers. I thought this would be grandiose and dwarf-esq. I built an experimental outdoor tower early on in the fort to test this out, and it worked just fine. I have now begun clearing out and smoothing the top of my first set of indoor towers. These towers are not free standing... they are fixed to the wall. I plan on using these for apartments and possibly some industry.

Other than the towers, there is very little of note in this map. I have received 10 migrants since the fort began, and so far have been able to keep most everyone busy. I am still not sure how indoor farming works without loam (something I have yet to find on this map) so for now I have a number of outdoor plots for planting seeds that I collected since arriving.

As usual, I built some initial structures to house my industry and stockpiles for the time being. I plan to move these deeper into the fortress and convert this area into military facilities. For now, I think my packs of war dogs and heavily trapped entry will be sufficient. I has certainly been enough to deal with the few kobold thieves I have encountered.

Point of Interest: outdoor plots

There are actually three different plots here that I am using to plant different crops. I am trying to build up decent reserves of the outdoor plants that I harvested when I first arrived. So far, food does not seem to be very difficult to come by at all compared to the previous version. I am not sure I like how much easier it is to keep your dwarves well-fed. - msallen

Looks like a good start so far. We set our own challenges in the game, and I think for new players, the least of their worries should be farming. There seem to be less dangerous places to start in, access to outside areas seems unrestricted so far. Your plans look good, I'm hopeful they will turn out well.

Liking the dorm towers ^_^, very neat and tidy. Good layout. No windows?

Yeah, I know I'm still just learning the game so I don't feel like I have to make things too complicated. But it is nice to get some of the basics of engineering and indoor farming down. Now that I have finally let go of the fact that my dwarves will die, and over half of my dwarves will be idle, its much more fun.

Oh, and windows are on the way. I've also never done any of the furnace related construction, so thats my next step.
