Bridgeesteems - 372 Late Winter by martinuzz

Map Description:

This fortress is designed around the 11x11 square. Makes designing less of a pain, using shift a lot.
Not long ago, the Queen arrived. She'll not live long, being 148 years already, but at least she can enjoy her royal quarters for now.

Point of Interest: Barracks

This is the barracks level, right below the royal floor. Four melee, and one ranged squad (the guard) train here. They're off duty at the moment, they train in 3 month blocks.
Magma works are here as well, for what better place to forge armor and weapons, than right next to the barracks?
The walls of the water reservoir bottom have floodgates pre-installed, for when I am struck by a fey plumbing mood. - martinuzz

Might be a dumb question, but why do your dwarves have nicer beards than mine? I play on ASCII, but the "beard" is just a little mouth. Did you replace the dwarf graphic with a custom one?

I do not use custom tiles. The only thing I did, is change the tileset windowed mode uses to be the same as the tileset that fullscreen mode uses. Go to DATA/INIT/init.txt, and change the line under [WINDOWEDY:25] to [FONT:curses_800x600.png]

That's very nice, I especially like the geometry in the lower levels, and the mosaic in the Hall of the Hated Sun.

Δ 42. Trade depot
This is the entrance to the fortress. Farms and trade depot are sited here, along with stockpiles for crafts. The big stockpiles to the right hold masterwork tables. I just exported a lot of them, resulting in many jailed dwarves. My duke *likes* tables. - martinuzz
Δ 41. Production level 1
Right below the entrance, the farmers workshops and wood industries are to be found. Animal training is also done on this level, and to the north, a herd of sheep is eating mushrooms conveniently close to the shearing spot. - martinuzz
Δ 40. Aquifer usage
From here, water is drained from the aquifer to feed the waterworks further down, through the 3-wide channel. If recently had some dwarves irrigate the room below, after initial testing at the other treefarm seems to prove irrigation matters. It's still draining. - martinuzz
Δ 40. Production level 2
To be able to control which crop to mill, I built 6 querns on this level, surrounded by their appropriate input stockpiles. Works like a charm. Booze is also produced here. I need to expand my booze industry though, once the next wave of children gets born, to be able to keep up.
To the west is a treefarm, irrigated by dwarfpowered pumps. It is said that muddied ground causes trees to spawn more often, and it seems to ring true. - martinuzz
Δ 39. Production level 3
On this level, high-tier products, like crafts, clothing, soap and prepared food are processed. To provide a short supply route for both kitchen as well as leatherwork, both the butchery and the tannery are built down here.
Commonly used furniture is stockpiled here as well.
Left of the center is my fortress' only mist generator. Where would I be, without one. - martinuzz
Δ 38. Communal buildings
In the center of this level is the dining room. It has no artefacts, no metal blinbling. Just a lot of exceptional diorite thrones and tables, and decent engraving. Enough to make it legendary, at least in the minds of bearded drunks. To the left, the mist generator output, and the only meeting area. To the right, the only party room, designated from a gold statue. It's in almost constant use, but that's okay. Got more dwarves than jobs anyways. - martinuzz
Δ 37. Hospital and jails
Right in the center, the hospital. To the left and right of it,my two wells, with soap and bucket stockpiles. 16 out of the fort's 24 prison cells are just behind the wells. Not that they need them, theyre well stocked with booze, within reach of chained criminals.
The jewelers workshops are to the north, and south.
To the south are my magma-safe material mason and mechanic, as well as a workshop where low-skilled masons can make tables to meet my duke's demands. Easier to atomsmash the excess, if it's not all masterwork. - martinuzz
Δ 36. Royal floor
This level initially held the Duke's quarters (four rooms arount the center), but was prepared to fit the arrival of a monarch not much later. To the south are the Queen's throne room, dining room, quarters and tomb, to the north will be the Queen's statue garden, once I get the platinum doors finished. The statue is already in place, it's an artefact statue depicting the crowning of the Queen. Around the complex is a ring of what will be the first level of the catacombs. Water flows in from the south, to be depressurized by the diagonal flow just before filling the drinking reservoir. - martinuzz
