Have you considered using pressure plates, floodgates, and non-pet-passable doors to have a kitten-based clock? It seems like that would work out.

The carnage from caveins is insignificant compared to 39a's fully armed and operational hiberstation!
You can generate this by using tweak and setting the biome/region out of range.
Oh, they don't have adamantium. Just lots of experience
